House Passes Amended Laken Riley Act, Bill Headed to President’s Desk
Washington, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed an enhanced version of the Laken Riley Act, and now the legislation is headed to President Trump’s desk for his signature. Congressman Riley M. Moore voted “Yes” and is a co-sponsor of the House version of the legislation, which initially passed on January 7th.
Under the amended bill, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must arrest, detain, and deport any alien who commits a theft offense, assaults a law enforcement officer, or commits a crime that results in death or serious bodily injury. In addition to the detention and removal mandates, the bill gives states standing to sue the Department of Homeland Security in Federal Court should officials fail to enforce federal immigration law.
Congressman Moore released the following statement:
“Securing the border and removing dangerous illegal aliens from our country is the most pressing priority for the American people. Today, Congress delivered - promises made, promises kept. I pray this gives some closure to Laken Riley’s parents and all those Americans who’ve lost a loved one at the hands of an illegal alien.
“I was proud to co-sponsor and vote ‘Yes’ on this legislation, and I can’t wait to watch President Trump sign it into law.”
