Rep. Moore Votes Yes on Laken Riley Act
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington, D.C. – Today, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, which requires Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest, detain, and deport any alien who commits a theft offense. Congressman Riley M. Moore co-sponsored the legislation, which passed today with bipartisan support.
Laken Riley’s murderer previously was arrested for theft in Athens, Georgia, but was ultimately released by local authorities without any action from ICE. He then went on to murder the young nursing student while she was out on a run on the University of Georgia campus.
In addition to the detention and removal mandates, the bill gives states standing to sue the Department of Homeland Security in Federal Court should officials fail to enforce federal immigration law.
Congressman Riley M. Moore released the following statement:
“Laken Riley’s murder jarred the nation, and the passage of today’s bill in her name is just one step we’re taking to ensure evil acts like we witnessed down in Athens do not happen again.
“The American public gave us a mandate to seal the border and deport illegal aliens this November, and we will continue to deliver on that promise. This is just the first step to keeping our commitments to the American people.”
