On August 12, 2000, Pat Buchanan began his address accepting the Reform Party’s nomination for president by calling the endorsement he had recently received from the Independent Steel Workers Union of Weirton one of the proudest moments of his life.¹ Eighteen months earlier, Buchanan had kicked off his campaign in Weirton because even then that West Virginia town was a powerful symbol of the forgotten men and women of America that globalization had left behind.
